Nutrition Fundamentals for Endurance Training
Most endurance nutrition advice fails for a simple reason: it's written for a generic training week that doesn't match the one you're actually doing. Fuelling that matches your training load, day by day, solves more problems than any specific food choice.
Match intake to the work, not a fixed number
A flat daily calorie or carbohydrate target ignores the biggest variable in an athlete's week: today's training isn't the same as yesterday's. A rest day and a four-hour endurance ride are not the same fuelling problem, and treating them identically means under-fuelling the hard days and over-fuelling the easy ones — the opposite of what actually supports adaptation and body composition goals at the same time.
Carbohydrate does the heavy lifting around training
Carbohydrate availability is the main lever for supporting harder sessions and recovering fast enough for the next one. Building intake around your actual session, not a fixed macro split, is what "periodized nutrition" means in practice: more carbohydrate on interval and long-endurance days, less need for it on genuinely easy days.
Protein is a recovery tool, not just a muscle-building one
Endurance training breaks down and repairs tissue constantly, not just after strength work. Reasonably consistent protein intake spread through the day supports that repair and helps preserve lean mass during high-volume training blocks, when total energy intake is often already under pressure.
Fuelling during long or hard sessions
Anything over roughly 90 minutes, or anything genuinely hard regardless of duration, usually benefits from carbohydrate intake during the session itself — the specific amount depends on the athlete, the gut training behind it, and the intensity. This is also where race-day fuelling gets rehearsed, not improvised: nothing new on race day is a cliché for a reason.
The risk of chronic under-fuelling
Persistent low energy availability — training hard while consistently under-eating relative to that load — shows up first as unexplained performance plateaus, poor recovery, and mood changes, and can progress to more serious hormonal and bone-health issues if it continues. If this sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation with your coach and, where relevant, a doctor or sports dietitian — this is one area where guessing carries real cost.
